>> help! help! >> reporter: next-door neighbor gene ward heard those cries for help. he went over, kicked down the door and battled intense smoke and heat risking his own life. >> i told him grab my shoulder, hold the wall and i took my hand, kept pulling his feet and took two steps at a time. then we got here and took two more people to gets i hands, set him in a chair and -- get his hands, set him in a chair and carried him across the street. >> reporter: prince george's county fire officials don't recommend doing this but say in this case they may have saved their neighbor's life. >> we understand that if they had not assisted their neighbor he probably would have sustained more serious if not fatal injuries. >> i will get anybody if i have to, just help anybody. >> reporter: a second man also risked his life to help bring the elderly man to safety. we're also told many other neighbors were here to offer a

helping hand. in temple hills, maryland, anny hong, fox 5 news. >> what an incredible community story. the elderly man and his son were treated for cuts and smoke inhalation. none of the injuries were life threatening. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. only on 9 tonight we're hearing from the driver of the car involved in a bizarre and deadly accident over the weekend. it happened saturday night on route 9 west of route 704 just outside of leesburg. as peggy fox reports, it all started when one car hit a deer. >> i couldn't stop bleeding. >> reporter: juan delgado had no idea what hit him as drove this xterra saturday night. he soon learned a prius had hit a deer coming the other way had crashed into the windshield. a leg slashed juan's forehead, but he's the lucky one. his best friend and wife's

cousin 26-year-old rodolfo villatoro who was in the passenger seat was not moving. >> they pulled him out of the car and start cpr were. >> reporter: because rodolfo showed no signs of life no helicopter was sent juan says. >> he was such a nice friend to have. any time i used to go anywhere he would go with me. >> reporter: rodolfo immigrated from guatemala five years ago and has been living with juan and his family since. in addition to working two maintenance jobs, he also helps take care of juan's children. rodolfo's mother also lives with them. marta villatoro said her son was a good boy and his death is enormously painful. the accident happened on route 9 west of leesburg on their way to the charlestown racetrack when the deer came crashing through the windshield. it hit the two men in the front and also a third man in the back and he's in intensive care. >> it could happen to anybody

else. >> reporter: peggy fox, 9 news now. >> the air bag did not go off in the xterra. juan thinks it's because the impact was not in the front but from above directly into the windshield. the pentagon says the reconnaissance plane crashed over the weekend 6 miles from a u.s. base in africa and four service members died including an airman from upper marlboro, maryland, 26-year-old julian scholten. that plane crashed saturday evening in djibouti. the military says it appears the plane did not crash because of hostile fire. hundreds of women surrounded the virginia state capitol in protest of several bills moving through general assembly. they were speaking out against a bill that would cut state aid to poor women seeking abortions, another that would require an ultrasound before an abortion and a third that defines a person as starting at the time of conception. >> we need to get back to the respect for life that we used to have in this country that's been lost. >> this all is an overreach by the state, government. this is a slippery slope and

eventually the goal of the personhood movement is to ensure that abortions are illegal. >> state police estimate more than 1,000 people took part in the protest. a poll this weekend by christopher newport university shows 52% of those asked oppose the so-called personhood bill and that comes from a survey of more than 1,000 registered voters in the commonwealth. final vote on legalizing same sex marriage could come in maryland by the end of this week. the house passed the measure last week and a senate committee is expected to vote on it tomorrow. a similar bill passed the state senate last year only to fail in the house. this time the house has already passed it. back to the breaking news out of anne arundel county. sky 9 monitors the scene of a crash being investigated as road rage. this is in gamgrel on route 3.

three people have been hurt in the crash and a stabbing. two of the victims have been taken to the hospital. we have a news crew headed to the scene. we'll bring you information as soon as we get it. 9 wants you to know more about the epidemic of teen drinking and this weekend the owner of a liquor store where we caught teens buying alcohol nearly two months ago was arrested. new at 6:00 scott broom has new reaction. >> you guys are like bombarding us for no reason. >> reporter: actually 9news has a very good reason. town square market on macarthur boulevard in northwest washington has been exposed for its alleged underage alcohol sales. first documented by reporter andrea mccarren earlier this month. >> the whole time we were down think don't think i saw one of age person go into that place. >> reporter: in january store owner 57-year-old richard dan ki kim of springfield, virginia, denied it all and threw mccarren out of the store. he kept on with business as usual. finally saturday night

metropolitan police arrested kim after district officers busted a 17-year-old virginia high school student who allegedly bought alcohol and was in possession of someone else's id. today the store was back in business. the angry clerk told me district police have no problem with town square market. >> if the cops have a problem, then they would have closed us down. >> they have an administrative process. >> reporter: d.c.'s deputy mayor in charge of public safety paul quander told us this afternoon the question of shutting down the stores will be in the hands of abra, d.c.'s alcohol regulation agency. >> we have sent a very clear signal with the arrest of an individual who was observed breaking the law and the administrative process will run its comps. >> reporter: quander told us this afternoon that apra is moving as quickly as possible -- abra is moving as quickly as possible even though 9news first alerted authorities to the situation at the store in early december. the men hoping to be the next president of the united

states spent this presidents day on the campaign trail. as we hear the report, the latest polls give rick santorum an eight-point lead in the race for the republican nomination. >> reporter: supporters in stubenville, ohio, gave rick santorum a huge ovation. santorum never mentioned his gop opponent. instead he blamed rising oil prices on president obama. >> it's because of the mismanagement of the president's policies overseas, because of his mismanagement of the persian gulf. our friend in the state of israel, we see a tension in rising prices. >> reporter: mitt romney also began his campaign days in ohio where delegates will be up for grabs tuesday. ohio is crucial for republicans. no gop candidate has ever made it to the white house without winning the ohio primary.

prices at pump are steadily moving highish and experts say we could see a nationwide average of $4 a gallon by summer. this comes after iran decided to cut exports to britain and france today. aaa says the national average in the u.s. is $3.57 for a gallon of regular unleaded. in the d.c. area that average is $3.65. today is your last chance to take advantage of a tax break on energy efficient appliances in maryland. if you buy an eligible air conditioner, washing machine, furnace or refrigerator by the end of the day, you won't have to pay the standard 6% sales tax. the holiday also applies to energy efficient light bulbs,

arlington. today kristin fisher was invited inside the home where a vice president was once denied entry. >> i was watching it in the morning on a small little tv. it was a real big thing. >> reporter: george tinwell remembers watching john glenn blast into space back in 1962. at the same time glenn's family watched it from inside their arlington home which was surrounded by the press. nearly 40 years later that same home caught the eye of george and emolia manuel. >> we actually didn't know about it when we came to see this property and spoke to the realtor, she knew about it. >> at first i thought it was kind of different, but didn't really give it much thought of. >> reporter: over the 12 years the couple has lived here they learned to appreciate their piece of space history. >> there's always people coming by and stopping. i happened to see high of magazine. the price was right. so i said well, i'll just keep

them here around the house of. >> reporter: inside these old high of magazines are pictures of glenn family watch -- life magazines are pictures of the glenn family watching the launch from the living room, the fear on his wife's face at liftoff and relief at landing. they famously refused to allow then vice president lyndon b. johnson and the media inside her home. >> i think of john glenn as a christopher columbus of. >> reporter: over the years the couple has met glenn a few times when he came back to visit his old neighborhood. on one trip he gave them this autographed photograph. >> on the bottom he says ps, take good care of my house, john glenn. >> reporter: the glenn family was able to watch arse launch on tv in the 1960s, but get this. half a century later the manuels can't do that because the u.s. does not have a rocket for them to ride on. after the shuttle fleet retired last summer, 50 years later. >> that's got to be a big deal. not everyone out there knows

this, but you are the daughter of two astronauts. what's the feeling of where man's spaceflight is now? >> i can't speak for all astronauts, but many astronauts are not happy about it and, in fact, john glenn spoke about that when the shuttle program ended last july. he said, "it is unseemly to me that here we are supposedly the world's greatest space space mace and we don't even have a way to get back and -- space nation and we don't even have a way to get back and forth to our own space station having to rely on the russian soyuz to get back and forth to our space station. it will be several years before the u.s. has our own replacement. >> we've got to say that a great picture you don't even know is coming. >> oh, no. >> how cute is that. >>, you serious? >> now old are you there? >> i'm like 14 months. that's got to be older. that's like 3 years old. this is right after my dad's first spaceflight. i was terrified of that thing. imagine getting into that when

start his major league cha -- early to start his major league career, 21-year-old anthony mondone. drafted as a third baseman the nats plan on playing him at spring in first and second. possibly the biggest story line is whether bryce harper makes the opening day roster. the 19-year-old arrived a few days early looking to get in some extra work making it a little difficult for them. the guys anxious to get to start back up playing considering position players aren't supposed to arrive until saturday officially. opening day is on the road this season against the cubs april 5th, home opener april 12th against the reds. as the redskins scouts make their way to indianapolis for the combine they have another issue to ponder. which free agents do they place their franchise tag on? will be it fred davis or laron landry? seems davis has the edge after a successful season despite being suspended for failing multiple drug tests.
